Why Geek Culture Feels Hollow—And Why We’re Not Giving Up

Gaming. Anime. Comics. Geek culture has never been more mainstream.

But let’s be honest—it’s also never felt more hollow.

Once a space for creativity, passion, and deep storytelling, geek media is increasingly dominated by shallow trends, recycled content, and corporate-driven hype. We get unfinished games filled with microtransactions, anime crafted to sell merchandise instead of exploring ideas, and fandoms that reward blind loyalty over honest thought.

If you’ve felt the burnout, if you’ve wondered what happened to the spark that drew you in to begin with—you’re not alone. And as Christians, we have every reason to ask: What is all of this shaping us into?

The Cultural Decay Beneath the Hype

Gaming used to be about fun. Anime used to dare to say something. Now it’s often just consumption for consumption’s sake. But this isn’t just a creative problem—it’s a worldview problem.

Modern geek culture, like much of the world, reflects a system that worships self, novelty, and profit. Stories are gutted of truth and beauty in favour of spectacle. Characters are made in man’s image—deified or broken beyond hope—because the true God is excluded from the narrative.

As followers of Christ, we don’t retreat from culture—but we also don’t blindly absorb it. We evaluate everything through the lens of Scripture. We test stories, characters, messages, and trends. Not just for entertainment value, but for truth, for virtue, for what glorifies God or distorts Him.

(BTW, that’s what CTRL Seek is about.)

CTRL Seek’s Mission: A Christian Voice in the Geek Space

In a world where media often shapes our views and values, I believe it’s crucial to examine what we consume—not just blindly enjoy it, but test it against Scripture.

This isn’t another hype machine. This isn’t shallow content for algorithmic applause.

CTRL Seek is a YouTube channel where we:

  • Expose the rot in pop culture—and the worldview behind it.
  • Highlight media that reflects God’s design for truth, creativity, and excellence.
  • Analyse stories and systems that idolize the self, redefine morality, or promise salvation apart from Christ.
  • Celebrate what is good, true, and beautiful—and call out what isn’t.

Yes, we love games. We love anime. But we love Christ more. That’s the filter everything runs through here.

Why This Matters

Culture isn’t neutral. Stories form people. Media is discipleship—whether it’s intentional or not. And geek culture is discipling millions daily. If Christians remain silent, shallow, or uncritical, we hand over our imaginations—and those of the next generation—to a system that denies the Creator.

We’re not here to complain. We’re here to seek—to trace the truth, the lies, the glory, and the depravity embedded in the things we love.

We do it because Christ is Lord over all—including our hobbies. Including our fandoms. Including our media.
